Bus from Guatemala City to Flores (Tikal): Times & Price

This is post is on buses from Guatemala City to Flores (Tikal National Park). There are 3 different companies. I will go over their departure times, price, location, and safety (based on reviews). The cheapest was Maya de Oro’s economy option.🙂

There are multiple methods of transportation that can be used to transit between Guatemala City and Flores. It costs approximately US 100 for an hour-long flight and US 16-40 for a 9-hour bus ride. You can also opt for tour companies with private shuttles, but those are more costly.

Based on my research, there are three bus companies that operate between Guatemala City and Santa Elena Bus Terminal. From Santa Elena Bus Terminal, you can take a Q. 20 tuk-tuk ride towards your stay on the Flores peninsula.

The three bus companies are Fuente del Norte, Linea Dorada, and ADN.

Based on price and reviews, Maya de Oro (a Fuente del Norte brand) is what I took. It had the cheapest option of Q. 130 and offered a 9-hour bus ride that departed at night. I arrived at 6:30 am in the morning, which was much more preferable than arriving in the middle of the night. There were a few scheduled stops along the way. The operator informed me that every bus has a GPS monitor and that drivers are required to report every stop. The economy bus was a bit packed in the beginning and the seats were average, but I didn’t mind the ride!

All in all, I felt safe throughout the ride.

They were also very quick to respond on their Facebook Page, which was a huge plus.

Although I contacted this company through its official Facebook Page, I never received a response.

I couldn’t find a legitimate website (I swear it was a virus site I kept on clicking).

After further reading, saw a few negative reviews regarding their safety. So I decided to avoid this company altogether. Maybe they’ve changed over the years? Do let me know if you’ve experience with ADN!

UPDATE!
They responded to me after a few days on their Facebook Page 🙂

Getting from Flores/Santa Elena to Tikal

It’s extremely easy to get from Santa Elena Bus Terminal to Tikal. There is an Q. 80 (US 10.3) return ticket that you can purchase for a direct shuttle. You can also grab a chicken bus at the stop sign outside of the bus station.

From Flores, it might be best to book through your hostel as there aren’t any terminals. The shuttle service from Santa Elena does pick up, I supposed without any additional cost.

Let me know if you’ve any questions!

Thanks so much for posting this info–it was a big help for me. I took the Maya de Oro bus last night from the Guatemala-Belize border to Guatemala City. And I dressed warmly–you’re right, the AC is too cold!!
